Minister Uwimana urges leaders to strengthen support for rural women

On 15 October 2024- Rwanda has joined the rest of the world to celebrate International Rural Women’s Day, with national-level events held in Nyamagabe District, Gatare Sector, Gatare Cell, Gashasha Village, under the theme “Ibidukikije: Ubuzima bwacu!”

Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Hon.Uwimana Consolée has called on leaders and partners to intensify their support for rural women, highlighting their crucial role in driving the country’s development.

Speaking at the event, Minister Uwimana emphasised the need for greater involvement of rural women in national programs such as the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), explaining the connection between rural women, nature, and sustainable development.

She further underscored the need for continued investment in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment for rural women, stating that enhancing their access to these key areas will ensure long-term national growth. Minister Uwimana also called for collaboration across sectors to bridge the gap between rural and urban women, ensuring equal access to opportunities and resources.

International Rural Women’s Day, recognised annually on October 15, originated from the 1995 International Women’s Conference in Beijing. It celebrates the vital contributions of rural women to both community and national development, while also focusing on the challenges they face and the need for collective action to create more opportunities for their advancement.
